What is the satellite that transmits signals in various different languages and contains a map to Earth?

I saw a small piece on the Discovery Channel on this satellite and I was just curious about it. Its supposed to call out to other potential life forms that may exist in various different languages, inviting them to follow the map on the satellite to Earth. Can anyone tell me what the satellite is called and where I can find more information on it? Thanks! :)

  1. Joe says:

It’s called Voyager and it’s not a satellite. It’s a space probe that was sent on a short tour of our solar system before being put out of commission. It was then allowed to drift on forever exiting our solar system. In case it ever comes across intelligent life it is equipped with a gold plated copper record that has instructions on how to play the record, where earth is and numerous recorded languages and sounds of earth.

A few different messages have been sent out from earth based transmitters. One well known message is the Arecibo Message transmitted from the massive Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico.

Satellites are generally those pieces of space hardware that we launch to orbit our own planet for communications, weather etc.
