You can watch satellite tv for free on PC in recent years all thanks to advancements in technology. School going kids and the younger tech-savvy generation are downloading live streaming video of satellite TV channels like never before. We will learn why it is a great idea to watch satellite TV on PC or computer and explore two methods to watch satellite tv for free on PC.

Why Is Everyone Switching To Watch Satellite TV On PC?

Just some years back, we could only watch satellite TV using our television sets and satellite dish setup. All of us know that the installation of a satellite TV dish system can be tedious and not everybody enjoys. Rather, most people try to avoid if they can. Satellite dishes can be gigantic monster fixtures as huge as a few meters and make our homes ugly and look like a TV station. If you watch satellite TV on PC, it does not require the installation of a satellite dish before you can watch satellite tv for free.

Ok, those who hate to set up satellite dish then go to the satellite TV service providers to install their proprietary satellite dish. They work better and are neater than those ugly DIY jumbo satellite dishes. And they are free if you sign up for a long term contract with these service providers for one or two years depending on their contract terms. But problem is you are tied to the contract and have to pay monthly subscriptions for the entire contract period. If you wish to terminate the contract, be prepared to cough up a tidy sum of payment. You can watch satellite tv for free on PC without being restricted to any contract because there is none at all. There are no monthly charges for watching satellite TV as well.

Two Methods To Watch Satellite TV For Free On PC

There are two popular methods to watch satellite tv for free on PC. One is using a PCTV card and the other using a PC satellite TV software.

PCTV Cards are TV capture cards that come in two types of installation. One is internal which must be installed inside your computer and the other is external which are break-out boxes (BoBs) that are attached to your PC using a USB port and cable. Internal PCTV cards are cheaper than external cards. But no matter which one you use, be prepared to fork out anything between $100 and $300 for a quality card from ATI TV, Plextor, Hauppauge, Pinnacle, IO Magic PC and other established brands.

PC satellite TV software is a hugely popular way to capture satellite TV on PC. Since it is a software application, it can be downloaded online and installed directly onto the computer without any external hardware. This PC application allows you to get more than 3000 free satellite TV channels from across the globe. The variety of programs range from LIVE sports, TV news, entertainment, documentaries, movies to kids channels. This software is a steal at $50.

Read up for more information at my satellite TV blog on this amazing software to watch satellite TV for free.

In many ways, digital satellite TV is similar to traditional television broadcasts in that its content is transmitted through the airwaves and captured by an antenna (in the case of traditional TV) or satellite dish (in the case of digital satellite TV). Also, the types of content that can be broadcast by both systems are analog and digital.

Unlike traditional television, however, digital satellite TV is able to deliver digital broadcasts at more practical prices because of its significant coverage advantage. This advantage is brought about by the fact that in the satellite broadcasting the content is positioned thousands of kilometers above the ground (unlike the radio transmission towers used in traditional television which are, at best, just hundreds of meters above the ground), which translates to a much wider “footprint” and economies of scale that is applied to its pricing consideration.

Digital satellite TV compresses and encrypts the digital signals of the information prior to broadcast. These broadcasts are transmitted from satellite ground stations to the satellites, which are, in turn, “blindly” transmitted by the satellite to all areas within its “footprint”. These compressed and encrypted signals are received by satellite dishes that are installed at the households and, depending on the authorizations given based on the subscriptions availed of, get decompressed, decrypted, and displayed by the digital satellite TV set-top boxes that are connected to the television sets.

Compared to an erstwhile entertainment favorite, Cable TV, digital satellite TV has the following advantages:

PracticalityDigital satellite TV’s main advantage over Cable TV is that it costs less to maintain the service because there are only four points of failure; i.e., the ground station, the satellite, the satellite dish, and the television itself. In Cable TV, there are several kilometers of cable that need to be checked when a particular subscriber loses his service, aside from trouble at the cable TV headend, other distribution points, and the television set. This advantage allows digital satellite TV service providers to charge less for digital content than cable TV providers.

Wider CoverageAmong the three broadcast media (digital satellite TV, traditional television broadcast, and Cable TV), Cable TV has the smallest coverage reach. This means that the addressable market is also the smallest for Cable TV, which limits the number of subscribers it can provide service to. In contrast, digital satellite TV only has one requirement, i.e., the area it will serve has a direct line of sight to the satellite. All a subscriber needs to purchase is a satellite-band compatible satellite dish, a provider-issued set-top box and a subscription plan with the digital satellite TV provider to enjoy the service.

There are several digital satellite TV providers that a potential subscriber may avail of. Among these are VOOM, DirecTV and DISH Network. These providers offer service packages that include high-definition TV channels and information aside from the standard packages that cable TV companies provide. All these without hurting your pocket any more than it would if you continued with your Cable TV service.

The satellite sends the signal back down to earth where it is picked up by a satellite dish, converted to a TV picture by a receiver, and displayed on a TV screen.

What is a TV satellite?

A satellite is a large electronic device that hovers in a stationary orbit 22,300 miles above the earth. It’s function is to capture the signals being broadcast from satellite TV centers and beam them back down to earth.

The reason satellites are necessary for large-scale broadcasts is that satellite TV providers use radio waves to broadcast programs. Radio waves can only travel in a straight line and a satellite TV signal can only be captured by an antenna that’s directly in line with that signal.

A satellite broadcasts a signal from overhead in the sky thereby avoiding buildings, trees, and other obstructions that would block the signal.

What does a satellite TV dish do?

The purpose of a satellite dish is to capture the signal sent to earth from a satellite.

The dish is curved so it can focus the signal on the feed horn that sits in front of the dish. The feed horn sends the signal to an LNB (low noise block) converter which converts the signal and sends it to a receiver.

How do satellite TV receivers work?

The satellite TV receiver is the electronic box that sits next to your TV and allows you to change the satellite TV channels. The receiver decodes the satellite signal, converts it into audio and video signals, then sends it to your TV.

In addition to regular receivers, DISH Network and DIRECTV also have DVR (digital video recorder) receivers that allow you to record your favorite programs, and HDTV receivers that allow you to watch satellite TV in high definition.

Where does satellite TV programming come from?

The major satellite TV providers – DISH Network and DIRECTV – pay networks like ABC, CNN, and HBO for the rights to their programming. The networks send their programs to a DISH Network or DIRECTV broadcast center which in turn sends the programs up to a satellite.

Where can I get satellite TV?

Satellite TV is available from three satellite TV providers in the U.S. – DISH Network, DIRECTV, and Sky Angel.

 * DISH Network offer 350 channels of satellite TV programming and 60 Sirius satellite radio channels with prices starting a $19.99 a month. Their satellite TV system – the dish and receivers – is free when you order a program package and includes free installation plus instructions from an installer on how to operate your system.

 * DIRECTV offers 250 channels of satellite TV programming and 67 XM satellite radio channels with prices starting at $29.99 a month. Their satellite TV system is also free when you order one of their packages and comes with free installation and free operation instructions.
